Fall Guys was introduced at Devolver Digital’s E3 conference last year. Speaking of vivid visuals, cute types, interesting game concepts that look like a Nintendo game, E3 entered the list of our favorite independent games. Although we did not get much news for a few months afterward, it became one of the best debut games of the year with the release of Devolver, the beta version of the game, and the enormous interest that came with it.
Fall Guys is at its core a battle-royale. The game you play with up to 60 people consists of rounds, unlike the map design in classic battle-royale games. In a game ranging from 4-6 rounds in total, a certain number of players are eliminated in each round. The winner comes to the last round and wins the game.
Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout Maps and Game Modes
A different task awaits you in each round. There are a total of 24 different maps in the game. These are categorized under 4 categories: race, survival, team, and final round. There are 9 different maps in the race, 7 in the team, 5 in survival, and 3 different maps in the final round.
In the racing category, you are trying to go faster than your opponents by passing through a lot of different obstacles. In the team category, the game divides you into random teams, sometimes two and sometimes three. And all the players of the team that completed the task on that map worst are eliminated. As the name suggests, the survival category includes maps that want you to survive for a certain period of time. The final category includes three different rounds that you can only play in the final round and the winner is the champion.
Map design and the tasks involved are not repetitive. On the maps, which are inspired by competition programs such as Takeshi’s Castle and It’s A Knockout published abroad, sometimes you try to throw the ball five times bigger than you into the goal, sometimes you try to complete the course by trying not to hit them while the fruit is raining on you, and sometimes you try to steal the limited number of tails from your opponent.
The fact that each of them has a different structure keeps the game away from the monotony and provides you fun times. Of course, the difference also means having maps you hate. Obviously, sometimes it is inevitable that you will be nervous about the whole map and sometimes only certain parts. The places I hate are not too many, but with a lot of players, I didn’t have much sympathy for team games. Nevertheless, I should mention that there are enough maps. In addition, the developer team Mediatonic announced that new maps are on the way.
The duration of rounds varies, but a total of 2-3 minutes. That’s why both winning and losing are fast. Mediatonic thinks that losing too quickly will disturb the player, so it is easily accessible to enter the next game. So you can focus on the next game instead of thinking about a game in which you (perhaps) unfortunately got eliminated.
I mentioned above the obstacles on the maps, but they are not the only ones you have to cross. There are dozens of falling men who want to overcome those obstacles with you, and sometimes dozens of them need to go through a tiny obstacle. Sometimes you may not be able to survive these inevitable PTT queues. Also, falling men can hold you back and sometimes you find yourself eliminated. Although this crowd creates funny images, it does not make you laugh when it causes you to be eliminated. I still find it fun to have the game this way.
How to control your guy
In addition to the arrow keys, the ctrl and shift keys are also used in the game. With Ctrl, you jump forward like a goalkeeper, with the shift you hold an obstacle, object, or another falling man. The mechanics are easy enough to get used to in just a few minutes. Anyway, the game passes briefly at first. Likewise, maps are also easy to learn, which can take a few hours at most.
Of course, when it comes to an online game, it is not surprising that the concept of “strange” currencies and “season” comes into play. There is seasonal logic in Fall Guys as well, and you can reach level 40 at most this season. To level up, all you have to do is play games.
Fall Guys gives you a certain amount of Kudos and Fame after each game, even if you are eliminated in the first round. While Fame’s allow you to level up, you can buy cosmetics with Kudos. This can be a cosmetic outfit or designs that change the color of the falling man and give various patterns.
There is also a currency called Crown, along with Kudos. With Crown, you buy cosmetics just like in Kudos. However, as you can imagine, the cosmetics you can buy with Crown are much more “cool”. Each time you level up, the game gives you different cosmetics or a certain amount of money. You can get the Crown by leveling up or winning a game.
Cosmetics, Game Currency, and Colors
While talking about cosmetics, let’s talk about perhaps the most important part of the game. Fall Guys preferred completely vibrant, heartwarming colors. It has been a game that I cannot get enough of with its structure that smells of Nintendo game and its wonderfully selected color palette. The bright colors attract you and in the evening fatigue you come into play by saying “let me take two hands”.
Likewise, this applies to fallen men. They are so cute, so cute that you are thinking of adopting one or something. It would be sweet to see him walk like a duck in the room or something. Anyway, each of them is very cute.
The biggest factor that makes this cute is of course the costumes. There are dozens of different costumes, but almost all of them are more beautiful than the other. The variety is really great and you can see different types in every game.
There are also costumes that include themes from games such as Half-Life, Hotline Miami (I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cyberpunk 2077 costume arrives soon). The game also has costume DLC for $ 12. You can also buy cosmetic items from the in-game store. Only these items remain in the store for a limited time.
I should also mention server problems that are frequently reported. There has been a serious server problem in Fall Guys since its release. You are constantly faced with problems such as being unable to connect to the game, expelling the game, and freezing the game. I think these problems will be fixed in the future (Mediatonic is also aware of the seriousness of the situation and even wrote the problem on the Steam page), but those who want to buy now need to consider this problem.
There are also a few technical problems. For example, on the map where we had to move the eggs to our own space, the egg suddenly disappeared, or the falling man fell from a place with a hole as big as a pinhole. Although I have never met, I have seen cheaters appear on the internet. But I must point out that Mediatonic is aware of all these problems.
CO-OP Game Mode
I also had the chance to try the game as a co-op. I can say I enjoyed it more than I played alone. Not having to flip backward to play together is really a huge plus. A great alternative for those who want to have fun with friends is Fall Guys.
As a result, Fall Guys has managed to become a nominee for this year’s best indie and online game awards. Its cute and cute structure, many different maps, and the option to play with friends make it very attractive. If you ignore the serious server issues that currently exist and don’t worry about minor nervous breakdowns on some maps, you can get the full price with peace of mind.
